Best Sleeping Bags of 2020

Sleeping bags are made to handle all conditions, from backyard campouts with the kids to climbing Mt. Everest. We have reviewed sleeping bags that are suitable for any condition.

If your trip takes you into the wilderness, there is no chance you will embark on your journey without a good sleeping bag. It is actually one of the most important decisions you will make for your trip. Good sleeping bags are crucial for warmth, comfort, safety and help your body perform well in the great outdoors as a whole. If you make a good choice, it will help you avoid sleep deprivation which can ruin your trip.

Sleeping bags are often one of the heaviest items in your backpack, alongside your shelter, sleeping pad, and backpack, so if you so happen to like the one that is lightweight, then grab it instantly as it will make a difference for sure.

One thing for sure, there are plenty of options to choose from. Nowadays, sleeping bags can keep you warm and cozy with different sorts of technologies which make them comfortable under any weather conditions.

Although our focus was on the best rated conventional sleeping bags for you to choose from, still even a serious backpacker can benefit from them.

How to choose the best sleeping bags?

Above and beyond, you must remember that what works best for you, doesn’t necessarily mean it works for the person next to you. It is clear that there is no single “best” choice when it comes to sleeping bags, as your individual circumstances will determine which product suit you best, since you will judge how critical some strengths and weaknesses are compared to your needs.

Generally speaking, we recommend sleeping bags that are insulated with duck or goose down, as this natural fill is the optimum option, and with the advancement of technology, manufacturers have succeeded to improve its biggest weakness: moisture resistance.

In addition, you should be careful to consider whether you want a quilt or mummy bag style. The mummy type is tapered at the feet and is enclosed nearer to the head are leaving room only for the face to show. It is also important to consider under which weather conditions you plan to use and decide on which temperature rating (the temperature a sleeping bag can maintain) is the best for you.

things to consider when choose sleeping bag, like price, weight, warmth, temperature rating, dimensions, quality, water durable and storage

The air temperature where you’ll use the sleeping bag should be considered when you choose the best sleeping bag for you. If you use sleeping bags in many different types of situations, you may want to buy more than one, with each customized to your unique needs.

1. TETON Sports Mammoth Double (Best Overall)

TETON Sports Mammoth Double- best overall sleeping bag 2020

This is a substantial quality product which can handle heavy duty warmth. Consider it for any season other than summer and you won’t be disappointed. All you will need is your basic pajamas and you are good to go.

We are talking about a huge sleeping bag, similar to a queen-sized bed. There is no problem therefore if your partner tosses and turns.

Of the positives is how it is easy to find and pull the zippers which are separate. It is possible to have it split into 2 sleeping bags, otherwise, you can easily get out without disturbing your partner.

An added advantage with this TETON is how it has inner baffles to trap heat inside and keep drafts out.

You will love the soft and fluffy feel as it touches your skin in the TETON Sports Mammoth Double, a nice feature given that other sleeping bags are itchy or scratchy to touch.

It is advised that you hand wash the sleeping bag only which can be a bit of a hassle as it is definitely hefty, so do consider asking for an extra set of hands to help you wash and dry it.

If you have the stuff to pack then use the stuff sack on the small side of the TETON Sports Mammoth Double. Despite the sleeping bag being big overall, the stuff sack is not as big, which would be useful.

Find a person to help you put it in a sack since as already said, this bag is huge.

Key takeaway

If you have never experienced camping, especially outdoors, then it will be difficult to realize how important it is to have a good sleeping bag with you. Nevertheless, let’s just say it is highly unlikely you will be a happy camper with a less than average one.

There are so many things to consider when making your purchase, whether it is to get your first sleeping bag or replace your existing one. For instance, you want to choose a sleeping bag that will respond to the weather conditions when you go camping or backpacking.

As a rule of thumb, any camping or backpacking enthusiast knows that it is important to keep warm during the night in winter time or keep cool during the summer, so it is important to consider the temperature rating each brand suggests for their model and decide which suits them best. Of course, you can always add an extra layer or two, in case you need it. It is important to stay cozy yet not overheated.

In addition, you must choose between a mummy or a rectangular shape sleeping bag; would you like to feel enclosed or do you prefer the freedom to choose which bag width is appropriate for you? If you like more width, then a quilt might be a better option.

Also, do consider the filling. Down is probably the best option in terms of heat retention, warmth to weight ratio, and you can use it under all weather conditions. In general, it also has a longer lifespan and you can easily compress it and pack it up to go. On the other hand, the synthetic filling is better for insulation under wet conditions, it is easier to clean and dries faster, while it is also cheaper.

The best sleeping bag will strike a balance between elements such as warmth, weight, functionality, and comfort, and most of them in this list offer the above features in an appropriate level.

It is up to you to decide which suits you best, based on your level of experience, personal preferences etc. Whether you do it for recreation or even if you are a serious backpacker, our list has something to please you all.

In case you think you know someone who will enjoy reading this article, don’t hesitate to share. Meanwhile, happy journeys.

Related: How to Wash a Sleeping Bag

  1. Excellent review! I wondered about the Teton sleeping bags and now I’m convinced that is the one I’m going to buy. I checked it out on Amazon and it’s a very good price for the value. I’m a little confused though because there’s different models of the teton range… I was browsing around and saw a review done on the sleeping bags and chose the Teton Sports Celsius Xxl as their top pick… it’s a smaller sleeping bag but costs about $60, should I rather buy the one shown in this review?

    1. Hi Henry,

Good question. The answer is that it depends.
The Teton Sports Celsius XXL is made for very large people. Think big and tall.
If you need that size, then, yes, absolutely, you should opt for the XXL.
The problem with getting more sleeping bag than you need is twofold. One is that it will weigh more than it has to which isn’t a big deal if you’re sleeping in a trailer or a tent next to your vehicle. But if you’re backpacking, every ounce matters.
The second problem is that a sleeping bag that is too big will be hard for your body to keep warm. If you’ve ever been sleeping in cold conditions and woke up after you rolled over because part of the inside of the bad was cold and you moved into the cold area when you rolled over, you know what I mean.
Without knowing your height and weight, the best I can do is recommend that you compare your height and weight to the size of each sleeping bag. You want some wiggle room, of course, but not enough to create cold spots where your body heat doesn’t reach.
      Enjoy the Great Outdoors!
