Mattress Buying Tips

Even though we spend 1/3 of our lives in bed, most people don’t give their mattress much thought. It is easy to believe we know what we need to know – we’ve known what a mattress was our entire life and they seem simple enough. But mattresses aren’t created equally. The right mattress for a specific person or couple won’t be the same as the right one for a different person or couple.

The mattress industry has been in a transformative stage for about a decade. Many of the mattresses that are available today didn’t exist when you bought your last mattress. When you consider that you’ll spend more than three of the next ten years with your mattress and how well you sleep has a significant impact on your health, career, and relationships, it makes sense to be an educated consumer.

Mattress Stores

If you think buying a mattress in a store where you can lay down on the mattress is a safer bet than buying a mattress online, you should know:

Researchers who studied mattress selection processes determined that laying on a mattress in a store is not a reliable way to choose a mattress.

Additionally, never buy a mattress in a store (or online) without understanding the sleep trial and warranty.

A sleep trial is a period of time that you can try the mattress in your own home and return it for a full refund. Most online retailers offer between 90 days through 1-year trials and give a full refund. At least one online retailer offers an 18-month sleep trial. Most stores don’t offer full money back sleep trials and if they offer a trial, it is usually an exchange only deal, not a money back offer. Many stores also charge re-stocking fees and return delivery fees while online retailers don’t charge for this in most cases.

Earlier this year, we spent over 100 hours researching the policies and warranties for all major mattress and furniture stores and many regional retailers. Our published results to help consumers make informed decisions about this important purchase.

JC Penney’s, Macy’s, Mattress Firm, Sleepy’s and Sears will have Black Friday deals, but make sure you read reviews and posts on Consumer Affairs from their prior customers before you make a purchase.

Online Mattress Companies

Online retailers know they have to earn your business and work hard to do it. They provide generous sleep trials, warranties that are clear and fair, transparency about the materials used in their mattresses, and great customer service – even when you decide to return their mattress. Most of them deliver right to your front door without requiring you to miss work to accept delivery. Many online retailers offer white glove delivery for an additional fee although some luxury brands include it at no additional cost. Online companies still care about your satisfaction after you pay for the mattress. They also offer much better financing terms than retail stores.

Before you buy a mattress make sure you read 20 Things You Should Know About Mattress Stores and use our free Mattress Buyer’s Checklist to make comparing features easy and ensure you get the best deal.

Do you need a new mattress?

If you’re not sleeping well, it may be your mattress’s fault. Sleep is the most important of the three pillars of health because you can forgo exercise and eat poorly a lot longer than you can go without getting enough sleep on a consistent basis. Sleep deprivation is at epidemic levels based on the CDC’s published statistics. Sleep helps your body recover, supports your immune system, and mental function. When you don’t get enough sleep, you’re more likely to experience an accident or injury and to have relationship difficulties.

Holiday stress will be worse if you aren’t getting enough sleep.

A new mattress will help if:

  • You get more rest when you sleep in a hotel than you do at home
  • You hurt (aches and pains) when you wake up without a medical explanation
  • Your lifestyle has changed the size of bed you need
  • You’re frequently sleepy during the day
  • The thought of going to bed isn’t appealing

Also keep an eye on how well your children’s mattresses fit their growing bodies.

Mattress Education

We research mattresses year-round. We’ve published guidance to help all sorts of sleepers find the right mattress for their needs the first time. These articles will help you make a good decision:

What to do During the Sleep Trial

When researchers studied the best ways to make a decision about a mattress, they found that keeping a sleep journal and sleep actigraphy were equally good at evaluating the best mattress. During the sleep trial:

Editorial and Advertising Policy

In order to carry out our mission of providing sleepers with expert information, we do not allow mattress companies to influence editorial content or consumer reviews in any way. Most of them ask for placement when they provide samples, but we never agree to give them anything other than an honest review.

We make money when our readers click on a link from our site before buying a product, but their cost isn’t higher and sometimes we are able to negotiate special deals that result in enhanced savings for our readers.

We evaluate mattresses every day. The results of our research and our choices for the best mattresses for different uses and categories can be seen here:

We wish you and yours a lovely holiday season and sweet dreams in the New Year.
