Tempur-Pedic is a manufacturer as well as a distributor of mattresses. This may not be the most exciting business in the world, but they do an amazing job of eliminating the prospect’s risk. They have a nice unique selling proposition with their 90-night tryout program.

You buy the mattress, they deliver it and set it up, and then you have 90 days to decide if you like it. If you do not like it, then they reimburse you and pick up the mattress. It is a nice reason to give them a shot, but the best part is how they back it up.

Research has shown that most Tempurpedic bed owners like their mattresses. Most of them say that they would purchase a Tempurpedic again. Not to mention that you get free white glove delivery and 10-year limited warranty.

The History of Tempur-Pedic

Tempur-Pedic is a well-known manufacturer as well as the distributor of mattresses, bed bases, pillows, and bedding. The company’s HQ is in Lexington, Kentucky (Coldstream Research Campus), and has plants in New Mexico, Albuquerque, Virginia, and Duffield.

Tempur-Pedic is a subsidiary of the Tempur, who are manufacturers of beds and beddings made from viscoelastic foam. This material was produced by NASA and then advanced by the Swedish researchers.

Temper refers to a breathable material that is capable of distributing body weight or pressure. This makes it suitable for use in the construction of mattresses. Tempur-Pedic Swedish Mattress is regarded as the first innovation in the construction of mattresses since the production of the first innerspring bed in 1925.

Temper foam was created in Ames Research Center. The center was developed at Moffett Field, California in 1939. The name was obtained from the chairperson of NACA, Dr. Joseph S. Ames. This was the second research laboratory of NACA.

The creation of Temper foam goes back to 1966. This is the time when Ames engaged Stencel Aero Engineering Corporation in a written agreement to help engineer a safer seating solution for commercial aircraft.

It is from this development that a viscoelastic foam was created. The cofounder of the viscoelastic foam was Chiharu Kubokawa (conducted initial experiments with the material). The other cofounder of the material was Charles A. Yost (perfected the material and exploited its commercial importance in union with NASA).

Temper foam proved to be more temperature sensitive than temperamental to a number of companies when NASA presented the viscoelastic foam to the public domain in the early 1980s. And most of the companies gave up the material.

However, Fagerdala World Foams never gave up. Instead, Fagerdala trademarked their own form of the viscoelastic material in the early 1990s and named it Tempur. The company was able to manufacture this version in a variety of shapes, sizes, and densities.

In 1991, Fagerdala World Foams launched the Tempur-Pedic Swedish Mattress, and they had immediate success in their home market. In the early 1990s, the company gave rights to a man from North American Distribution (Lexington, Kentucky), Robert Trussell.

Along with a partner, Robert Trussell developed the Tempur-Pedic Inc. He had no experience with mattresses or foams when he launched Tempur-Pedic.

Mikael Magnusson (Fagerdala Vice President), flew to the US in January 1992 to meet with Trussell and his partner. This is when they were accorded the North American Distribution rights for the Tempur-Pedic product line.

Tempur-Pedic Highlights

  • Comfort

This brand has above average supportiveness, pain relief, and pressure point relief. There are other brands that equal Tempur-Pedic in comfort, pain relief, and supportiveness. However, no other mattress exceeds Tempur-Pedic.

  • Superior Motion Isolation

This basically means that you can move on, get on, and get up off the bed, and your movements will not disturb your partner. This makes the brand, at least in this regard, couple friendly.

  • Better BBB Rating

Tempur-Pedic has better business bureau rating. The brand has A+ and they are accredited. The rating is rock solid. It hardly fluctuates, and this is in contrast to the company’s main competitors who have ratings that can fluctuate from time to time.

What this basically means is that Tempur-Pedic customers tend to be treated a little bit better than the way other mattress manufacturers treat their customers. Tempur-Pedic are probably more likely to take care of any product related issues that their customers have.

  • Availability

Tempur-Pedic mattresses are widely available in many showrooms. This is in contrast to their competitors, particularly other foam mattresses. They can be somewhat more difficult to locate. In fact, many competitors sell mostly if not only online.

  • Warranty

They provide sagging coverage. Sagging is a top complaint by mattress owners, including foam bed owners. The brand has superior sagging coverage than most of its competitors. This advanced sagging warranty can be viewed as Tempur-Pedic having more confidence in their product, especially in the durability and longevity of their mattresses.

Tempur-Pedic Drawbacks

  • High Price

Tempur-Pedic mattresses can be 30% to 60% higher than the competition. By competition, we are referring to other foam beds that have similar specifications and owner satisfaction. So, if you buy a Tempur-Pedic, you need to be prepared to pay a premium.

  • Difficulty of Movement

Their mattresses are difficult to change positions on the bed or it might be difficult to get up and off the bed. This is mainly due to the higher density foam that is used in some Tempur-Pedic mattresses, especially the high-density models.

  • Off-Gassing Odor

Approximately 15% of mattress owners say that when their Tempur-Pedic is new, it gives off a chemical like smell that can last for a few days. However, in some cases, the odor can last considerably longer.

  • Sleeping Hot

Approximately 12% of owners say that their beds sleep hot, especially for HD models. The truth is that Tempur-Pedic mattresses sleep slightly hotter than the average memory foam mattress. However, this is not a widespread complaint by users.

Tempur-Cloud Supreme

Tempur-Cloud Supreme

  • Overview

The Tempur-Cloud Supreme is an all-foam bed from the industry giants, Tempur-Pedic. We are interested to see how all of their experience helped in the construction of this mattress. It is designed to offer adaptive support and more pillowy softness.

  • Who is Suitable?

There is no doubt that the pillowy softness, as well as adaptive support, is suitable for side sleepers who have issues with increased weight concentration due to a smaller surface area on your side. A lot of times, this can cause pressure points at your shoulders and hips.

  • Who is Not Suitable?

The Tempur-Cloud Supreme may not be a suitable choice for stomach sleepers. This is so, since it can cause your hips to sink in, causing your back to curve. So, you should consider something a little bit firmer than this model.

  • Construction

The cover of the bed is made of polyester and spandex blend. It is stretchy and snaps back into place really quick when you pull it with your fingers. You do not have to worry about it bunching up when you roll around.

Construction

This model is made up of four foam layers. It is a combination of memory and poly foam. Up top is the comfort layer made of extra-soft Tempur-ES. It slowly responds to pressure, but contours to your body. It determines the feeling of the bed.

Then there is a second layer of foam, which also has slow response to pressure. The first and second layer combined are both going to allow you to sink in to provide great pressure relief. This makes the bed ideal for side sleepers.

Further down is a poly-foam layer, which is not too firm and has a quick response. This is really going to be a transition support layer. So, as you move through the bed from the soft top layers, it is going to transition you down, preventing you from suddenly hitting the firm base.

Then again, there is the firm base layer at the bottom. It is a high density poly-foam. It is the foundation of the bed that provides the shape and a deep compression support for your body. It also to dissipate heat.

  • Feel and Firmness

If you press into the bed, you will immediately get the foam feel. It will contour your body as you sleep. When you press in, you will feel the air flow through the mattress providing deep sinking for superior pressure relief.

When you lay back on the bed, you will experience a bit of an initial firmness, which disappears as you layer longer. You will feel the slow response as you try to roll around, causing a little interference when you try to change position.

  • Motion Transfer and Edge Support

This bed has slow pressure response. However, it is remarkable at reducing motion transfer. You can effectively change positions without interfering with your partner’s sleep.

When you are sharing your bed with a partner, you need to use the entire surface area. Edge support can be incredibly important. Unlike other foam beds, this model will provide reliable edge support, but with a little bit of compression.

  • Construction

Tempur-Cloud Luxe Breeze-Construction

The Tempur-Cloud Luxe Breeze features a high performance fabric cover that is infused with state-of-the-art cooling technology, which helps to develop a cool sleeping surface. The cover is also lightweight and breathable.

Its construction features four layers. The first one is the comfort layer made of extra-soft Tempur-ES, which is instilled with PureCool technology for cooling comfort. Apart from drawing heat away from the body, this level determines the feel and adapt level.

The next section is the support layer, which is obtained from ultra-breathable material. This level disperses excess heat, distributes body weight, and provides support.

The third and fourth levels serve as the base layers that support the Tempur material on top of it. These two layers are engineered to help distribute heat from the bed.

  • Feel and Firmness

When you press down the Tempur-Cloud Luxe Breeze, you will feel the memory foam layers pressing down for support. When you sleep on the back, you will feel yourself sinking into the layers. You will be able to move around because of the base layers.

It does a great job of conforming to your body and filling in the space beneath your lower back. It offers the perfect pressure relief when you sleep on your side thanks to the sinking. However, the soft feeling may not be ideal for stomach sleeping and back pain.

  • Motion Transfer and Edge Support

Motion transfer is remarkably reduced. So, you can wake up at the crack of dawn without necessarily interfering with your partner’s sleep.

Generally, this bed offers adaptive support for proper body contouring and pressure relief and cooling comfort. However, the edge support is not excellent as with innerspring mattresses.

Tempur-Contour Supreme -Construction

Its unique construction starts in the quilt with easy refresh top cover. The cover is a stretch knit design that is very thin and allows the comfort padding layers to do a very good job of contouring to your body and performing the way that the company intended.

The other nice part about this cover is that it is zip off removable. So, if you want to unzip it, take it off, clean it, and then put it back on from time to time, you can that and it is usually very easy.

Underneath the quilt, you have the smart climate treatment, which is very cool to the touch. It is designed to help people who have temperature issues when they first lay down. It is made to help create a cooler level of comfort as you drift off to sleep.

Comfort padding layers in this mattress consist of entirely Tempur material. This is the same recipe quality material that the company became famous for.

Back support is provided through the base layer, which is a solid piece of black foam. Apart from heat dispersion, the base layer offers remarkable support for superior conformity and proper spinal alignment.

  • Feel and Firmness

As we earlier mentioned, this is the firmest bed in this collection. It feels firm and sleeps cool. The firmness of this bed helps to properly align your spine when sleeping on your back or stomach. It achieves this by distributing your weight evenly across the sleeping surface.

  • Motion Transfer and Support

One of the best properties of this all-foam bed is isolation of motion to a very limited area. This is a very important feature for couples, since it allows each partner complete independence of motion.

This bed impeccably adapts for modified support. Most of the support offered comes from the base layer. However, the edge support may not be perfect for heavy people, especially when sitting on the edge.

  • Who is Not Suitable?

The medium firmness of this bed is more on the firmer side. Therefore, this may probably not be the best option for side sleepers.

  • Construction

Tempur-Flex Supreme -Construction

The cover of the Flex Supreme is a polyester Spandex blend. Therefore, it is very stretchy and soft. It easily snaps back to the position as you grab it. So, the cover will not cluster when you change sleeping positions.

The cover has a little bit of thickness. So, it feels pretty cozy, but it is breathable to allow airflow into the bed. The cover is also fully removable, allowing you to take it off for washing.

The Flex Supreme is a hybrid construction, which means it combines both foam and spring layers. At the top, we have the comfort layer, which is 2 inches of memory foam, and it has a very slow response to pressure.

Below that there is an inch of memory foam, which provides deeper contour, but it is a little bit firmer. This layer responds a little quicker to pressure, and this helps to start the transition from the soft top into the support layer below.

The support layer is made up of 6-inch pocketed coils. They are individually wrapped, which means they move separately to help the contouring of the bed. This provides you support and bounce to keep you from feeling stuck in the bed as you change positions.

The coils are also really great because they create air pockets, allowing air to flow through so you do not sleep too hot. The coils are surrounded by 4 inches of high density poly foam that is going to give you some edge support.

At the bottom there is 2.5 inches of high density poly foam base. This is the foundational support, which gives the bed its shape, and this is what the coils are going to press on at the bottom.

  • Feel and Firmness

With a firmness feel of medium firm, the Flex Supreme provides a nice blend of initial body contouring for pressure relief and deep down support. It offers the ideal feel and firmness for back and stomach sleepers.

If you will be sharing the Flex Supreme with a partner, you will need to use the entire sleeping surface. This bed provides the ideal support the body needs for proper weight distribution and personalized comfort.
