We recommend ZOMA for all side sleepers and for back and combo sleepers except those who are on the heavier side or people who sleep primarily on their stomach. ZOMA’s immediate feel is a softer and cozy feeling but the core support layer does a good job of providing support for individuals up to about 230 pounds. Exclusive side sleepers would be okay up to about 250 pounds.
ZOMA is constructed of three foam layers and the breathable cover. The upper layer, Triangulex™, provides pressure relief and zoned support which we discuss in more detail in the support section of the review. The Reactiv™ layer controls motion transfer and works like memory foam, adjusting to your every move.
One of our testers recently tried the Purple mattress and said that you can feel the shape of the squares in the Purple and, in the same way, you can feel the Triangulex™ in the ZOMA. That wasn’t a problem and they thought they’d get used to it. They were also lying directly on the mattress without a mattress encasement or mattress pad.
ZOMA is priced at a good price point for a zoned memory foam mattress with a full 10-year warranty and 100-night sleep trial.
- Twin – $550
- Twin XL – $650
- Full – $750
- Queen – $850
- King – $950
- California King – $950
- Split King – $1200
If you need two twin XL’s, order the split king and save $100.
Your sleeping position has a lot to do with whether a particular mattress is right for you. When you first lay down on the ZOMA, it feels comfy and softer than you expect. But ZOMA’s support is zoned so it is firmer where your torso rests and softer where your shoulder lays on the mattress.
Side sleepers will be comfortable on ZOMA.
Back sleepers feel supported and the firmer support in the torso area keeps their spine aligned.
Lightweight stomach sleepers will do okay on ZOMA, but heavier stomach sleepers should opt for a firmer mattress.
Combo sleepers who primarily sleep on their side and back will like ZOMA, but combo sleepers who are heavy and spend a lot of time on their stomach should give ZOMA a pass.
ZOMA won’t make you hot. The cover is breathable and wicks away moisture, but it doesn’t actively reduce or absorb heat, making it neutral as far as temperature is concerned. The Traingulex™ layer is made with an advanced open-cell structure that facilitates air flow to prevent heat buildup in the mattress.
ZOMA is great at containing motion transfer. Your partner or pets aren’t likely to disturb your slumber when you sleep on the ZOMA.
Firmness and Support
We noticed a difference based on where you positioned your body on the mattress. If you scooched down, it changed the feel. You’d want to find your sweet spot and try to sleep there every night on this and any zoned mattress.
Instead of one firmness rating, when a mattress has zones with different firmness levels, we’ll rate each zone. It’s disingenuous to assign one firmness rating to an entire mattress when the firmness level varies.
Firmness Rating – Shoulders and knee area
Firmness Rating – Torso and Hip area
Because side sleepers need a mattress that lets their shoulder go into the mattress, this difference in firmness between the shoulder and torso areas makes this a great mattress for side and combo sleepers. Lightweight back sleepers and back sleepers whose weight is carried in the torso will do well on the ZOMA. Lightweight stomach sleepers will be okay but a stomach sleeper that carries much weight in the hips or thighs will have a difficult time maintaining spinal alignment on this mattress.
The top foam layers are responsive and contour to the body so every part of you feels supported. The high density base ensures you won’t bottom out and makes the ZOMA durable.
One downfall of zoned mattresses is that the zones fall differently on people of different heights. If a couple with different heights, say 5’2” and 6”1”, sleep in a zoned mattress, they should adjust the location of their pillow to optimize the way the zones work for their body which means their pillows won’t be side by side. The advantages of zoned support offset this downfall.
Price, Durability, and Warranty
ZOMA provides a full 10-year warranty on the workmanship and materials. Since many memory foam mattresses wear out before the 8 th year, a full 10-year warranty is great. At the current price of the ZOMA, the cost of a King averages out to be $95 per couple for each of the 10 years covered by the warranty. That’s less than 2.5¢ per day. The warranty will kick in if the foam cracks or there are visible indentations greater than .75”. You must use the proper type of foundation and keep your proof of purchase to use the warranty. We encourage customers to put the receipt in an envelope and attach it to the tag on the mattress where they’ll be able to find it if needed.
ZOMA provides a 100-night sleep trial at no risk because delivery and return shipping is free. We strongly encourage making sure any mattress you buy has a sleep trial. A sleep trial allows you to try the mattress and see how you actually sleep on it before you’ve committed to sleeping on it for a decade. You can use our Sleep Journal to record the quality of your sleep during the trial.
Give the new mattress some time. Your body has to adjust to the new feel.
During the 1st 100 nights, contact ZOMA and they will arrange to return the mattress and refund your money, no questions asked. If you’re unsatisfied, call ZOMA to arrange the return as soon as you decide you won’t be keeping the mattress.
ZOMA’s Best Features
The Triangulex™ and Reactiv™ layers work together to help your muscles recover faster and by supporting your body so your muscles don’t have to work while you sleep, facilitating deeper and more restful nights. Use your sleep tracking watch to see how well you sleep on ZOMA.
When you’re buying a new mattress, you want to be sure it doesn’t contain materials that will compromise your health. You spend 1/3 of your life in close proximity to your mattress which means unhealthy materials can affect your health.
CertiPUR-US® conducts surprise inspections for products it certifies. Certification means that the mattress is not made with heavy metals or known toxins. ZOMA is CertiPUR-US® certified. It is also made in the USA in facilities designed to reduce VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds).
We expected but did not experience any off-gassing when we unwrapped the ZOMA. One of the reviewers has chemical sensitivity and she didn’t notice any scent.
When I sit on the edge of the ZOMA, I slowly slide off. It’s on a bed that is too tall for my feet to touch the ground. If it were lower and my feet were resting on the ground, I don’t think I’d slide off.
When lying on the mattress with your weight distributed the length of your body, the edge support holds up if you’re a couple of inches in from the side.
Why we subtracted points:
Good for sex: Memory foam doesn’t provide the bounce that makes a mattress great for sex. Depending on how you end up positioned on the mattress, you may sink in more than you’d like during intimacy. If you restrict your weight to the torso area it won’t be a problem but people who tend to move around a lot during sex may have to move again because one of them is sinking into the mattress.
Cooling Evaluation: The ZOMA is neutral but doesn’t provide active cooling with gel, copper, or other ingredients that draw heat away from the body.
All the others are related to the mattress not being great for folks who are heavier, but not yet in the heavyweight category for mattresses (over 230 pounds). Lightweight people should have a better experience on the ZOMA.
Why we subtracted points:
Customer Service: We had some questions on the weekend and we were unable to get an immediate response on their chat service. They did have the ability for us to leave a message and someone would respond later. Not manning their chat line may be one way they reduce costs and keep the mattress at this price point. We think it is a good trade-off. When we interacted with customer service, they were great.
Company Reputation: We always subtract a point for new entrants because there are unknowns. This reflects the newness of the brand.
Trial: One of the nearest competitors, Nectar, offers a full year trial. This rating reflects the comparison with the longer trials offered by some competitors.
Warranty: Please note that we rated the warranty based on memory foam mattresses. In comparison to a latex mattress which can have warranties that last 20 or more years, the score would be much lower.
You can order online. Your mattress will usually be delivered within a week. Unfortunately, ZOMA does not offer financing. If you need financing, check out Nectar Mattress.
ZOMA was delivered quickly in a box to the front porch at no charge. Set-up was easy; taking it upstairs to one of our testing rooms was a breeze. We usually use a team to carry the mattress upstairs, but ZOMA was a one-man job.
The washable cover zips off so you can wash it in your washing machine.
ZOMA is delivered to your door and is lighter than a hybrid mattress with coils so it is easier to move upstairs before you take off the plastic wrap and let it expand to its full size. It takes 24 hours to fully expand and be ready for you to sleep. It will work on a variety of different foundations.
Our Test Results
Four sleepers tried the ZOMA we were provided. One side/back side sleeper, one combo sleeper who weighs 215, one full-time side sleeper, and one back sleeper. All of them thought the initial feel was cozy. Their input is incorporated into our review.
The bottom line is that ZOMA is a good mattress for back, side, and combo sleepers who don’t spend a lot of time sleeping on their stomach, especially for lighter weight individuals. When compared to the Polysleep mattress with a similar price point, ZOMA will be much more comfortable for lighter weight sleepers because of the pressure relieving zone for the shoulders.
