Start with what each service actually includes

Mattress delivery labels can sound similar while describing different jobs. Standard delivery may end at your doorstep, building entrance or another designated drop-off point. Room-of-choice delivery generally means the carrier takes the mattress into a specified room, but it does not necessarily include unpacking or placing it on a bed frame. Setup or white-glove service may add those tasks. Old-mattress removal is often a separate option, even when setup is included.

Before comparing prices, read the service description for the mattress and your delivery address. Check which floor the team will reach, whether stairs are covered, and whether they will remove packaging. If you need an existing bed frame disassembled or a new one assembled, ask explicitly; mattress setup alone may not cover either task. A clear list of included work is more useful than the service name.

Match the delivery method to your home

A mattress shipped in a box can be convenient if you can bring the package inside and move it to the bedroom. The box may still be heavy or awkward, especially on stairs or around tight corners. A full-size, uncompressed mattress requires a different route through the home. Measure doorways, hallways, stair turns and elevator openings when access looks uncertain, and check the package dimensions rather than relying only on the mattress size.

Think through who will be available on delivery day. A doorstep service may be enough if you have help and can manage the lifting. Room-of-choice service may be worth considering if carrying the mattress is the main obstacle. Setup can be useful when you want the packaging taken away, but confirm whether the team will place the mattress directly on your chosen foundation and what preparation they expect before arrival.

Plan for the old mattress before checkout

Removal is easiest to arrange while ordering, but availability and conditions vary. Ask whether the provider will take the old mattress during the same visit, whether they also take a box spring, and whether each item carries a separate charge. Some services require the old mattress to be accessible and free of bedding. Others may decline items that do not meet their stated collection conditions. Do not assume the team can move an old mattress from a different room.

If removal is unavailable, make a separate plan before the new mattress arrives. Depending on local options, that might mean arranging a municipal collection, using a suitable recycling service or asking a retailer about an alternative pickup. Confirm any local requirements yourself. Until collection, identify a place to keep the old mattress where it will not block the delivery route or your use of the room.

Compare the total cost and timing

The lowest advertised delivery price is not always the lowest practical cost. Compare the mattress price plus any fees for room-of-choice service, setup, stair access, packaging removal and old-mattress collection. Check whether a service is available for your address and mattress model before treating it as part of the offer. If you are comparing sellers, make the same list for each one so that different bundles are easier to evaluate.

Timing matters too. Look for the estimated delivery window, whether an appointment is required, and what happens if you miss it. Ask whether setup and removal occur in the same visit or require separate scheduling. If you need to take time off or coordinate a building elevator, a more predictable appointment may be more valuable to you than a small difference in fees. Keep your order confirmation and service details handy in case you need to clarify what was booked.

Prepare the room and check the delivery

Before the appointment, clear a path from the entrance to the bedroom, move fragile items out of the way and make sure the foundation is ready. If removal is booked, strip the old mattress and follow the provider’s preparation instructions. For a boxed mattress, read its opening instructions before cutting the wrapping, and leave enough space to position it safely. The manufacturer’s guidance can also tell you when the mattress is ready for use.

When the delivery arrives, check that the mattress size and model match your order and look for visible damage to the package or mattress. If something appears wrong, document it and follow the seller’s reporting process promptly. Keep delivery paperwork until you have confirmed that the agreed setup, packaging collection and old-mattress removal were completed. These small checks help make the service you paid for as useful as the mattress itself.
